About

The Hash House Harriers (also called HHH, H3, or simply the Hash) was begun in 1938, in Malaysia, by a group of British military officers and expatriates looking for a way to keep fit and rid themselves of the weekend’s excess.  Accountant Albert Gispert is most often considered the founder, though he had compatriots. These first hashers based the activities of the Hash on a game called Hare and Hounds, played by British children.  The Selangor Club, where many of the men lived and frequently ate, was not known for it’s fine cuisine and had been dubbed the hash house. From this, the name Hash House Harriers was born.

Since those humble beginnings in 1938, the Hash has grown into a world-wide phenomena, with clubs in most of the globe’s major cities and many smaller ones as well.  Each group, called a kennel, ranges in size, diversity, and general temperament, but all boast at least two things: love of beer, and appreciation for trail.

In it’s simplest form, hashing is a trail run (or walk) in which a trail leader (hare) plans and lays out a trail for the others (hashers/hounds/the pack) to follow.  The hare may leave a variety of symbols along the way designed to tease, confuse, excite, slow-down, or distract the pack.  There may or may not be adult beverages to be had. Eventually, the pack makes it to the end, songs are sung, laughter is laughed, camaraderie is built, and then everyone retires to some chosen place where (further) adult beverages may be acquired.

The Tallahasee and Area Hash House Harriers (T&AH3) was established in 1993ish, and has hashed in the area ever since.  The group meets every Thursday for dinner and drinks at various establishments around town, hashes every other Saturday afternoon, and also holds trail (TANK) on intermittent Wednesday nights every few months. You can check out information for out next gathering, see photos from previous trails, and get a sense of what we do by going to the Events page.
